Weekend Gardening and Swale repairs

The pool has been consuming us, but unfortunately, the rest of the projects here don’t wait. We missed our window for this year‘s gardening in terms of vegetables. We still have the opportunity to plant squashes and melons though so today was a maintenance day.

Fencing is always an ongoing project so this weekend Mom and I worked on our very neglected in-ground garden. It needed new fencing before anything else could happen.  We will let the chickens in to take care of the weeds, then add landscape fabric, reinstall the irrigation and seed. Hopefully by the heat of summer we will have some juicy melons and by Halloween we will have some pumpkins!

Also on the agenda (back to the pool) was further work on the swale because we are expecting another week of rain. Aside from the functionality it needs to look good. I ordered another ton of rocks, but they are Oklahoma stone where my original rocks were some kind of Austin blend I think (they were already on the property.) So I am swapping out new rock for the original rock in the beds around the yard. It has to tie in and look intentional for it to be seamless and calming. I spent a good two hours emptying out the mud that slid into the swale, and another two hours moving rocks around to prevent another collapse. David helped cart the rocks over since it was too soggy for the tractor to operate this weekend. This is great, though because we got an arm workout in at the same time!

The boys spent some time pruning the trees and putting up mosquito repellent so we don’t get eaten following all the rain.

I also snapped some pics of our very pregnant does and they look so good! We are so excited to see what beauties we are blessed with.

Dad is consumed with his own project now - designing the new house they are building this summer here on the ranch. Can’t wait to share that progress as it unfolds.

Love this life!
