We had most of the fencing complete and started working on the swale (water needed to be directed around the pool because we interrupted the flow installing it on the slope) and adding rocks around the perimeter of the pool inside the edging we installed in March. We seeded the yard around the pool. We began this design back in February, but got serious in May and it was completed. We also did some landscaping around the house to tie in the pool landscaping to the rest of the property – we added decorative “two man boulders” (thank you tractor) around the house and pool and redid some of the garden beds at the house and the new bridge. We took advice from our goat friends and attended our first show which led to a lot of goat shaving as we practiced how to get the girls ready. This of course had a snowball effect which we will see later. The only progress made on the pool was the installation of the sun shades and this was simply out of necessity. She is not ours, but we like to pretend she is and we love on her and ride her as if she was our own. Horse fence panels Fully electric Bucks If you are planning to keep bucks, their quarters should be far enough away from your does that an escape isn’t detrimental. A buck in rut will do anything to get to a nearby doe in heat, and he will escape through any weakness. We keep our breeding does in a pen and surrounded with horse fence panels. We have a 50 foot pen between the ladies and the bucks. (Our bucks would need to break out of their pen and then into the girls pen to get to them.) If you have the ability to separate them visually that’s even better. The wipes are convenient (until they dry out) but they are not particularly good for the environment - they don’t decompose well and were using at least two per goat twice a day - that was a lot of wipes. It is also not so easy to get wipes that are antibacterial but not harsh on the soft skin of the udders, so our girls teats were really drying out. When we originally designed our coop, I artistically suspended some beautiful creep Myrtle branches haphazardly across the span of the space. It was very beautiful, but it turns out it wasn’t very efficient, as we didn’t have a whole lot of room on the perches and it caused them to poop on the walls and all over each other from time to time. When I had that vision, I didn’t anticipate how many chickens we would have at this point, and my chicken tunnel turned into a chicken boat as we have given over quite a lot of of the square footage of our garden to the chickens. Turns out Texas is not a great place to grow crops anyway, so this worked out on both ends. These issues are not a big deal if you are not farming or ranching, but it creates a big mucky, muddy, wet mess anywhere that animals are concerned, and as you know, water and animals do not make a good mix because this encourages the growth of bacteria and can make everybody sick. Dad has installed drainage in front of and around both barns, created Swails, and has started to direct all the water coming from our neighbors lots out into the pasture where it won’t bother anyone! Kyla’s birthday was in September and I nostalgically remember loving the spin art at my elementary school carnival back in Pennsylvania. My father being the handiest person I know, rose to the challenge of offering this at Kyla’s birthday party. He made not one but three spin art machines and it was a huge hit! We have since used them at private parties, the police department’s National Night Out, our town‘s annual Christmas tree lighting event, and a PTA dance coming up in February. It is so much fun to watch children create masterpieces, and see the joy in their eyes when we reveal the piece at the end. This has been the most exciting (and stressful) part of my year, and really of our entire time in Texas so far, but since we won’t be able to enjoy it until Spring, the tractor still takes the top spot for 2024. A visit to San Antonio inspired me to stop at a pool showroom in New Braunfels. We’ve had our eye on a pool since we moved here and Ive pushed hard for this since then. I renewed our design and budget plan, crunched some numbers with my husband and we felt confident enough to take a ridiculously stupid loan and start construction in early November. We are beyond excited, as it will keep our kids entertained all summer, provide the background for some epic parties as well as enable us to extend our workday on the property. This one has been on the list since very early in the year, we wanted to move the garden shed so that we can create a permanent spot for our travel trailer. The area that currently holds our travel trailer will be available for those who want to come and stay with their own campers, and we will increase our parking area in anticipation for some things we’re planning next year. When I was designing and budgeting for the pool, I also figured that behind the garden shed would be a great place to conceal the pool pump. So thanks to Dad and his tractor and some help from the neighbor, we moved it and now it looks like we expanded the chicken and bunny fortress. Thankfully we have been blessed with a pretty cool dude, he is friendly and chill and we decided to keep him around. Dad fabricated the most amazing hood for our stovetop. We repurposed some of the surplus 30 year old flooring I discovered in a closet. The stone we picked up in May and an acquisition of a steel cable reel inspired us to start digging for a new fire pit - which has turned out to be the longest project we have embarked upon to date. We spent most of this month digging a 16 foot diameter base for our fire pit. It was very slow progress. We acquired Lilly, our second registered doeling. We put together a supply of goat milk soap, beautiful wooden ornaments, candles and room sprays and other woodworks, and my daughter launched her Slime Factory. This was also the month my husband decided to switch careers after a difficult year and a tough internal struggle on leaving marketing.
